Spend a little more – you won’t regret it!
The old saying, “you get what you pay for” holds true. For your convenience and the comfort of all, spend a little more and make your life easy. If possible, take a non-stop flight. Make sure your accommodations are large enough and with needed amenities.
Have a Plan
Don’t arrive at your destination and then try to figure out how you are getting to your (cruise ship, hotel, resort). Nothing is worse than tired parents and children wandering and waiting in an airport. See Top 10 Travel Mistakes
Opt Out Of The Early Boarding Option
It sounds tempting, however, by the time everyone boards the plane, you are in your seats for at least a half hour to an hour, increasing your “plane time” and the time in which your children must be still and confined.
Surprise the Kids
When mine where young, I would buy new toys for them to use on the plane. If they’ve never seen it before, it holds their interest. Don’t buy anything with a million pieces. A huge box of crayons is NOT a good idea. Depending on age, electronic games can keep children amused, but don’t rely on just that or the movie being shown on the flight. , Don’t give them everything at once; switch toys when they get bored
Carry Snacks And Drinks
Adhere to airline regulations, but, be sure to have snacks and drinks for all. Don’t over stuff children. Feeding non stop to “keep them quiet” is a bad idea. Stomach issues and bathroom issues can become a problem. Be mindful of what types of snacks and drinks you offer. A sugar rush is not the best idea. See Tips for Packing for your Vacation. List of allowable carry on foods and drinks.
Dress Everyone Comfortably
Yes, you want your kids to look adorable, but keep comfort in mind. Pigtails and ponytails start to hurt, especially when trying to sleep. Tight clothing can be annoying. Being too hot or too cold can make for crankiness, so be aware and prepared. Changing babies is much easier if they aren’t wearing fancy outfits. Be aware of footwear for all. Blisters make for misery, no one should wear new footwear. Keep Kids Healthy.
Create a Plan For Getting Separated
Many parents today choose to use bracelets or children’s temporary tattoos when travelling. There’s also harnesses and wrist tethers. Take a picture of your child each day when you are heading out anywhere, it could help. Talk to your children about strangers — but don’t scare them so much that they won’t seek help. Let them know that looking for a police officer is always the first option. Point out what the workers at any destination are dressed like (hotel uniforms, resort uniforms, theme park uniforms). Make a meeting place if separated.
Don’t Procrastinate on Paperwork
The U.S. requires children (even babies) to have passports. Both parents have to go to the post office to do the renewal though divorced parents may take a notarized authorization from the other parent. See Safety and Planning Article.
Destress Meal Time and Adventures
Most want their kids to try new foods and activities; broaden their horizons. Suggest, explain but don’t force and don’t lie. Crying, scared or angry children all make for a miserable time for your party and the public nearby. I once witnessed a parent blatantly lie to a very young child about a ride. The end result was a terrified, distrusting child. More than likely the child now has a life-long fear of rides and total distrust of what anyone says. I must admit, when the kid threw up in the parent’s lap, I was thinking – Karma does exist!
See my travel vlog for my stories on how I almost lost each one of my kids at different times. Most of my travels consisted of myself and my kids with at least one other adult and their kids. The majority of the time though, there were many adults with their children! On the few occasions it was just the three of us, it was a bit nerve racking, especially two of those times.
