hug4

For Celebrity Chef, Joe Borio, host of the YouTube cooking show, Cooking Italian with Joe, growing up in the Italian “Family” was always filled with so many ways to say I love you. When it comes to showing love, passion, with a whole lot of hand motions and loud voices, nobody does it better than Italians. Add to this some homemade wine, pasta, eggplant, and the best of the best desserts and you are living in comfort food coma all day long. Here is a list of 5 ways Italians say I love you to their family.

The HUG

First there is the hug. Sounds simple and kinda common, but not even close. It starts with a full body pullback and a head tilted to the side, then a huge smile and the arms and hands open up, and get ready, here you GO! There is the pull in and then the squeeze. So in the end it’s not a hug at all, it is actually massive chest compression followed up with of course, a massive shake. If you are part of the family who is younger and not seen for a bit, the shake will be more of a series of rapid jolts, and it will certainly get your attention as intended. Funny and simple, yet warm and comforting, what I would give to have a hug from my grandpa Tony, with the cigar off to the side, one more time.

Italy, one of the top destinations in 2016.

The KISS

The kiss is a big one, and it always begins with a big squeeze of the face and a slight back and forth by your favorite aunt. The lipstick is gonna leave it’s mark and is a signature of who kissed you. It’s like a badge of honor on how much they love you and family favorite is always based on how big was your lipstick smudge. Along with the kiss and smudge, you are now left with a strong scent of perfume as you are greeted like the paparazzi, being welcomed by the over caffeinated aunts, cousins, and grandma or nonna all dressed beautifully in the kitchen. There was no greater feeling of love than to be covered with kisses and perfume by my aunt Emily and my aunt Ann.

Where is your dream destination?

The Grab

Almost violent and borderline assault, get close to the uncle who you are named after or who hasn’t seen you in a while, and be prepared for a reach out grab, pull in and a hard slap on the back. This is when you know you’ve waited too long before stopping over at uncle Vito’s house or at the very least, calling and saying hi. It is almost like being handled by a local cop for mouthing off, but was always finished with a huge smile and a puff of smoke from the cigar. My uncle Tony was always the best with the grab and still goes for it today with his deep laugh and huge smile, knowing I am loved and part of something special.

The Pinch

This is a big deal! This is when you get close to your mom or grandma or nonna and you forget to get ready for it. It is the embarrassing squeeze of your face in front of everybody that brings laughter and smiles and red faces and love. So you start off like a fish and then their hand goes to the side and you are in the claw for the pinch. Their fingers like a crab are grabbing and then pinching a large part of your cheek and then with increasing pressure there is the squeeze followed by a shake. Your face will hurt and then have some mild numbness followed by a loss of function for 5 minutes. Although painful, the pinch is always met with positive accolades and comments of how big you are and how much you look like your father. No one was better at the pinch than my mother or nonna, and the smile in their eyes when you smiled back always warmed my heart as I would be red in the face but warm in the heart.

Taking a train to a ferry and then what?

The Slap

Oh boy, welcome home uncle Lou. You walk in and say high to the “Family”, and Wham, there it is! Like a bolt lightening you never saw coming and first realize you have been whacked by the faint sting of a hand on your face. Then you hear this huge laugh, see a massive smile and warm eyes and the smell of the cigar. You never were mad, as this is the way Italian tough guys, say I love you, to their nephews while looking strong, teaching you to be tough. After my uncle was 75, the slap became lighter and slower, but was always met with a smile and then tears of happiness as the tough guy, uncle Lou, finally showed he was just a big softy at heart.

The Days I Almost Lost My Kids & Save Your Sanity

JOIN US IN CRUISING FOR A CAUSE – invite family, friends and business associates!  AUGUST, 2017

You can have fun and help those in need!

Come paint and help raise funds!  Bring a friend.

mis1.jpg

Spend a little more – you won’t regret it!

The old saying, “you get what you pay for” holds true.  For your convenience and the comfort of all, spend a little more and make your life easy.  If possible, take a non-stop flight.  Make sure your accommodations are large enough and with needed amenities.

Have a Plan

Don’t arrive at your destination and then try to figure out how you are getting to your (cruise ship, hotel, resort).  Nothing is worse than tired parents and children wandering and waiting in an airport.  See Top 10 Travel Mistakes

mis2

Opt Out Of The Early Boarding Option

It sounds tempting, however, by the time everyone boards the plane, you are in your seats for at least a half hour to an hour, increasing your “plane time” and the time in which your children must be still and confined.

mis3.jpg

Surprise the Kids

When mine where young, I would buy new toys for them to use on the plane. If they’ve never seen it before, it holds their interest.  Don’t buy anything with a million pieces.  A huge box of crayons is NOT a good idea.  Depending on age, electronic games can keep children amused, but don’t rely on just that or the movie being shown on the flight.  , Don’t give them everything at once; switch toys when they get bored

mis8

Carry Snacks And Drinks

Adhere to airline regulations, but, be sure to have snacks and drinks for all.  Don’t over stuff children.  Feeding non stop to “keep them quiet” is a bad idea. Stomach issues and bathroom issues can become a problem.  Be mindful of what types of snacks and drinks  you offer.  A sugar rush is not the best idea.  See Tips for Packing for your Vacation. List of allowable carry on foods and drinks.

Dress Everyone Comfortably

Yes, you want your kids to look adorable, but keep comfort in mind.  Pigtails and ponytails start to hurt, especially when trying to sleep.  Tight clothing can be annoying.  Being too hot or too cold can make for crankiness, so be aware and prepared.  Changing babies is much easier if they aren’t wearing fancy outfits.  Be aware of footwear for all.  Blisters make for misery, no one should wear new footwear.   Keep Kids Healthy.

mis20

mis24.jpg

Create a Plan For Getting Separated

Many parents today choose to use bracelets or children’s temporary tattoos when travelling. There’s also harnesses and wrist tethers.  Take a picture of your child each day when you are heading out anywhere, it could help.  Talk to your children about strangers — but don’t scare them so much that they won’t seek help. Let them know that looking for a police officer is always the first option.  Point out  what the workers at any destination are dressed like (hotel uniforms, resort uniforms, theme park uniforms).  Make a meeting place if separated.

Don’t Procrastinate on Paperwork

The U.S. requires children (even babies) to have passports. Both parents have to go to the post office to do the renewal though divorced parents may take a notarized authorization from the other parent.  See Safety and Planning Article.

Destress Meal Time and Adventures

Most want their kids to try new foods and activities; broaden their horizons. Suggest, explain but don’t force and don’t lie.  Crying, scared or angry children all make for a miserable time for your party and the public nearby. I once witnessed a parent blatantly lie to a very young child about a ride. The end result was a terrified, distrusting child. More than likely the child now has a life-long fear of rides and total distrust of what anyone says.  I must admit, when the kid threw up in the parent’s lap, I was thinking – Karma does exist!

See my travel vlog for my stories on  how I almost lost each one of my kids at different times. Most of my travels consisted of myself and my kids with at least one other adult and their kids.  The majority of the time though, there were many adults with their children!  On the few occasions it was just the three of us, it was a bit nerve racking, especially two of those times.

Top 10 Reasons You Should Take A Vacation

JOIN US IN CRUISING FOR A CAUSE – invite family, friends and business associates!  AUGUST, 2017

You can have fun and help those in need!

Come paint and help raise funds!  Bring a friend.

Taking A Vacation Is Good In Many Ways

Taking a vacation isn’t just fun and educational, it’s also good for your health.  All work and no play creates stress and stress is a killer, physically and mentally.

Why taking a vacation is good for you:

It strengthens family relationships.  Vacations form bonding and shared memories.  When families talk about the same incident, it strengthens their connection.

vac1

Vacations increase laughter.  Laughter is good for you.

vac2

You become a better leader once you return to work and in your personal life.

You relax, which in turn relaxes your mind and body.  The break does wonders for you in all aspects of your life.

You get the adrenaline pumping. Many people partake in adventurous activities on vacation.  Adrenaline increases heart rate, dilates blood vessels, opens air passages and all your cells get more oxygen. It’s a natural high.

vac10

Vacations are your incentive to do a good job, show up when expected.  Many people won’t call out of work..  They want to save as much time as possible, working toward a goal of a long vacation.  It’s their reward.

Vacations Improve Your Sex Life.   “Surveys indicate people who vacation regularly reported feeling sexier, with greater romance in their relationships – which equates to better sex! ”

vac11

You can beat depression. Women who do not take regular vacations are more likely to be depressed. Women who travel at least once a year are happier year round.

vac11

You learn about those closest to you. Spending time away from everyday life affords families time to have long conversations, even while partaking in activities.

vac10

Vacations are good for the heart in two ways.  Physically and emotionally.  People who vacation yearly are less likely to suffer from heart disease and more likely to remain in love. People feel closer to their children and if they travel in groups, closer to family and friends.

vac21

Get away.  You deserve it.  It’s educational and good for your health and relationships!

Top Downstate New York Attractions

JOIN US ON A CARNIVAL FUNDRAISING CRUISE – CLICK FOR INFORMATION!     Join us on the cruise from New York City and then spend some time visiting downstate New York after the cruise!

Beautiful downstate New York.  If you have never visited, you should.  What are the some of the must sees downstate New York you ask?

New York City, aka Manhattan and known locally simply as “the city.”  Local terminology downstate is you go IN to “the city” and OUT to “the Island”, Long Island.  Why that is, I do not know, however, that is the way it’s said.

down1.jpg

  • You definitely want to visit Times Square.

down26.jpg

  • Be sure to take in a Broadway Show. These are just a few shows to choose from.  Don’t forget about off Broadway!

down27.jpg

  • Of course The Empire State Building is a must, and if you visit at the holidays, Rockefeller Center and possibly a holiday show.

down2

  • Radio City Music Hall’s world-famous Rockettes is always a popular and spectacular show.

down8.jpg

  • St. Patrick’s Cathedral is one of my favorite attractions.  I used to work around the block and back then, the Cathedral was open to the public.  I spent many a lunch hour enjoying the beautiful structure inside and out.

down9.jpg

  • Take a stroll through Central Park, relax in a rowboat, take a horse and carriage ride,  or enjoy a concert and the many play areas.

down4.jpg

  • Recent first-time visitors enjoyed seeing the world-famous Plaza Hotel which was featured in Home Alone 2.

down5.jpg

  • Many seeing New York for the first time also like to visit downtown.  There you can visit Wall Street, see the stock exchange and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

down6

  • You can also go up into the observatory of the New World Trade Center.

down3.jpg

  • Walk the Brooklyn Bridge!

down7.jpg

  • No trip is complete without visiting Battery Park, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. I worked right across the street from Battery Park when I worked downtown and my view from the law firm was of the Statue of Liberty!

down23

down38.jpg

There’s so much more to do in New York City.  We haven’t even touched on the other four boroughs, Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx and Staten Island or the exquisite dining available.

If you want to take in a few baseball games, well, there’s Yankee Stadium in the Bronx and Citi Field, home of The Mets, in Queens. For sports fanatics, there’s many other events as well.

I’m born and raised in New York and have done almost all of the attractions mentioned and many not mentioned.  I highly recommend a visit to New York.  You can spend three months here and not do it all!

Long Island – locally known as “the Island” Long Island is made up of the North Shore and the South Shore, aka as the North Fork and the South Fork.  If you head out to the world-famous Hamptons, which is comprised of many towns on the South Shore, not all necessarily containing the word Hampton, you are known to be heading “out east.”  The Hamptons is comprised of towns called Water Mill, Wainscott and Sagaponack, as well as Westhampton, Hampton Bays and East Hampton and more.

long island map

Central Suffolk also has North Shore and South Shore towns.

down12.jpg

Local jargon states you head “out east” if you are going out past the forks.  When you head “out east” you can be heading out to either the North or South Shore.

Locals live ON Long Island, not in Long Island.

Nassau County.  Nassau is about a half hour to 45 minutes from NYC, depending on where you travel to.  There is a lot to see and do in Nassau County.

down10.jpg

  • Old Westbury Gardens is always a beautiful choice.  Old Westbury Gardens, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the former home of John S. Phipps, his wife, Margarita Grace Phipps and their four children.  The magnificent Charles II-style mansion is nestled amid 200 acres of formal gardens, landscaped grounds, woodlands, ponds and lakes.  Westbury House is furnished with fine English antiques and decorative arts from the more than fifty years of the family’s residence.
beth22
Me at Old Bethpage Village Restoration about a year ago for a Memorial Day Presentation

  • Old Bethpage Village Restoration – The Old Bethpage Village Restoration is a 209-acre recreated living museum village in Old Bethpage, New York. The village opened in 1970 with dozens of historic structures that had been saved from demolition by Nassau County

down11

  • Sagamore Hill – Sagamore Hill was the home of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States, from 1885 until his death in 1919. During Roosevelt’s time in office, his “Summer White House” was the focus of international attention. Explore the natural surroundings and become inspired by the legacy of one of America’s most popular presidents.

down13.jpg

  • Jones Beach State Park – The park – 6.5 miles in length – is renowned for its beaches (which, excepting the beach on Zachs Bay, face the open Atlantic Ocean) and furnishes one of the most popular summer recreational locations for the New York metropolitan area. It is the most popular and heavily visited beach on the East Coast, with an estimated six million visitors per year
  • Jones beach also hosts the yearly Breast Cancer Walk – Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, which my family and I attend.  It is also home to the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater (originally Jones Beach Marine Theater.  It is an outdoor amphitheater located at Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh, New York. The theater was designed to specifications provided by Robert Moses, who created Jones Beach State Park.
  • Long Beach – Above are pictures shot by me, except for the one OF me,  a few years ago visiting spectacular Long Beach, NY.  Long Beach took a hard hit from Hurricane Sandy, but it’s been rebuilt and is as beautiful as ever. Long Beach is the home town of actor Billy Crystal who did a lot to help rebuild.

These are just a few of the many, many things to do in Nassau County.  Now onto Suffolk County.  Get ready for an amazing adventure.  Fire Island, Splish Splash Waterpark, The Hamptons, Wine Country, concert venues, history and nightlife.

fire island.jpg
Pictures I took one summer on Fire Island
  • Fire Island – You can get to Fire Island National Seashore from a number of locations on Long Island, by various modes of transportation.
  • From mid-May to mid-October, many visitors either drive or take the Long Island Railroad to Bay Shore, Sayville and Patchogue on Long Island to access passenger ferries that service communities and National Park Service facilities on Fire Island.

splish9.jpg

  • Splish Splash – Long Island’s famous waterpark.  Once a vast farmland on the east end of Long Island, Splish Splash is now the largest waterpark in the Tri-State area, spanning over 90 acres.  It opened in 1991 and has added onto the park consistently, almost yearly.  Splish Splash has been a family destination for 26 years and continues to carry family needs as its number one priority.  I’ve had a lot of fun through the years at Splish Splash with family and friends, but one adventure has always stood out!  See my new travel vlog for that story.

hamptons.jpg

  • The Hamptons, my old stomping grounds.  I spent a lot of time in the Hamptons over the years.  While it is known as the playground of the rich and famous, it is also home to the upper middle class and middle class and attracts visitors from around the world, as well as, locals.  With magnificent beaches, sprawling golf courses, amazing restaurants and nightlife, no wonder The Hamptons is a desirable location.  It is also host to destination weddings and/or honeymoons.  I honeymooned in Montuak, which is part of The Hamptons, five years ago myself.
  • The Hamptons is also a hotspot for shopping, art, dining and nightlife. It is home to The Hamptons Classic.  The Hampton Classic Horse Show is a Grand Prix event that is one of the larger show jumping contests in the United States and runs several days yearly.
down39
Pictures taken on my honeymoon

  • Monntauk – I used to spend summers out in Montauk with family as a young teen and visited with friends over the years.  I honeymooned out there five years ago.  Yes, it’s rather local for me, however, it’s a big honeymoon destination and we chose it for personal reasons that year.  We didn’t want to be far away from family. Montauk is also home to an annual St. Patrick’s Parade that attracts thousands locals from all over Long Island and New York City, and tourists alike.

down46.jpg

down48.jpg

down47.jpg
One of my visits to a winery out east.
  • Long Island Wine Country.  As you can see from the map above, the majority of the wineries are on the North Shore/Fork of Long Island.  They offer tours, tasting, live entertainment and much more.  It is very popular among both tourists and locals. Many  destination weddings take place at the wineries out east.  They are also very desireable for bachelorette parties.
  • Greenport.  Greenport is on the North Shore, not to far from Orient Point, which is the farthest point on the North Shore of Long Island.  You can take a ferry from Orient Point to Connecticut, which I’ve done many times to visit Boston and Maine. The ferry allows vehicles and pets (and children if well contained!)
  • Greenport is a quaint little town which offers romantic bed and breakfasts, motels, marina, shopping, restaurants, beaches and more.   It is east of wine country and many enjoy staying in Greenport and taking a day trip west to wine country.

  • No stay in Greenport is complete without visiting Claudios – Housed in a historic space with an antique bar, this family-run eatery serves old-school ocean fare. I’ve eaten there many times through the years and I highly recommend it.  You can enjoy an intimate, formal dinner inside, a meal on the deck outside or enjoy live music and dancing on the marina.  *Word on the street is that the venue is being sold after over 100 years of family ownership, however, I’m thinking the new owner will keep the traditions, the atmosphere and the menu.

  • For those who love the water, downstate New York is where you want to visit!  We have amazing beaches, water activities, whale watching, boating, jet skiing, diving and more!

As you can see from the pictures above, I’ve participated and enjoyed almost all of the activities mentioned.  There’s so much more I’ve done and you can do while visiting.

Downstate New York offers the best of all worlds from big city excitement to farmland, wine country, and amazing beaches, culture, history, entertainment and fun!  Come visit, there’s something for everyone – from Manhattan to Montauk!
